Higher Salary

Have you ever thought about how much one extra point on the LSAT is worth? We have: up to $5000/ year. We looked at three hypothetical applicants and the starting salary they can expect before and after a 10 point score increase.

Applicant One has a 3.1 GPA and starts with a 152 LSAT score. With those stats, she has a 50% chance of admission at schools with a private sector average starting salary of $59,018. With a 10 point score increase and the same GPA, she now has a 50% chance of admission at schools with an average starting salary of $76,000 (a $16,982 increase). For each point she improved on the LSAT, her expected starting salary went up by $1,698.

Applicant Two is at the other end of the spectrum: he has a 3.7 GPA and a 163 LSAT score. A 10 point score increase and a 173 LSAT score moves him from a $107,687 to a $140,000 starting salary! Each point is worth $3,231 to him.

Applicant Three is the most typical applicant with a 3.4 GPA and a 158 LSAT. A 10 point increase increases her starting salary from $72,435 to a $122,273! Each point is worth $4,984!

Applicant One: 3.1, 152 = ~$1,700 / year per point
Applicant Two: 3.7, 163 = ~$3,200 / year per point
Applicant Two: 3.4, 158 = ~$5,000 / year per point

Even More

The results here probably understate the actual long term impact of higher LSAT scores, because the salary differentials at different firms become wider with time. The first year associate with a higher starting salary also gets bigger raises and gets them more often.

Law Schools weigh the LSAT heavily in the admissions process, so small score increases get students into much better schools. And better law schools place students at more higher paying law firms. Better schools also offer a better education, better connections, higher employment rates, etc.. Also, getting a higher LSAT score can pay off in getting scholarship money from a school that an applicant might have been accepted to anyway.
